Interpreting the meaning of a mandala based on its visual attributes is as fun and exciting as creating the mandala. Color, motion, numerology, symbols and the geometry itself all add dimension to what has been called a "tapestry of the soul." The meanings that I have assigned to these different dimensions are meant to be a guideline. Your own meaning will exert itself as you gaze upon any mandala.

Color

Red symbolizes the energy of life and lust for life. It has a stimulating effect on the senses and the psyche. It indicates passion, .strong will power and being rooted in the body.

Orange symbolizes joy and optimism. It has a reinforcing effect and promotes self confidence as well as enthusiasm.

Yellow is the bringer of light and represents truth and wisdom. It opens the gates to universal knowledge and higher intelligence.

Blue suggests serenity, calmness, and peace. It connotes that Source filled place where there is unconditional love and support.

Green symbolizes growth and nurturing. Its effects are calming and harmonizing.

Indigo symbolizes universal consciousness. It promotes crossing the border of what is still barely .perceptible to what is invisible.

Violet is a pale yet intense color. It represents a positive spiritual development and a proclivity .for mystical experiences.

Purple symbolizes devotion and personal growth. It indicates individualism, sensitivity .and introspection. It also expresses the emergence of the feeling function as mental .processes no longer dance around intellectual theories, but partake in the creative .journey to manifesting new realities.

Numerology

Zero is the symbol wholeness and the absence of everything at the same time. It contains a sacred space for that which will be manifested. It is the beginning and the end. It is a circle, the symbol of perfection.

One is the symbol for the beginning of everything. It is unity and individuality at the same time. In a mandala, the number one represents starting something new and a strong connection with source. One expresses a universal truth very eloquently: each person is a unique individual, "one of a kind". One symbolizes the connection of all things; the single circle that contains all. One is the expression of the monistic male god archetype or yang, the male energy. As a number, one makes all other numbers possible.

Two is the symbol of duality and opposites. It is associated with separation, twins or pairs, and the alter-ego. While two represents balance, it can also mean indecision. Two can be an expression of polar opposite thoughts that are not integrating.

Three is the symbol of vitality and expression. Three marks the beginning, the middle, and the end. Through the integration of two, three is created as something completely new and separate, a higher lever of consciousness. The trinity concept is core to many religions. In a mandala, three can symbolize any dynamic process or life cycle. It can also be an expression of the desire for independence.

Four is the symbol of the earth. It is an expression of the four cardinal points of the seasons, the directions, the phases of the moon, and the elements. It elicits order, stability, harmony and the rational. Four suggests balance and wholeness. The rhythms by which the universe come into being are thought to have a fourfold quality by some cultures. The complete OM mantra consists of chanting three sounds, "ah", "oh", "oo", and then breathing in silently. Thus the complete chant consists of four elements.

Five is the symbol of the expansion and natural wholeness. It is an expression of the human with outstretched arms and legs, reaching for the stars while being fully grounded. Five in a mandala may mean new adventures or being consciously engaged in creating a vision.

Six is the symbol completion. The hexagram illustrates beautifully the wholeness of the number six as male and female triangles unite to create a perfectly balanced six pointed star. Six in a mandala can express completion of a cycle or the feelings of satisfaction that are part of your accomplishment. It also suggests that a time for rest is here.

Seven is the symbol intuition and inner wisdom. It is regarded as a sacred, lucky and mystical number all over the world. There are seven days in a week, seven chakras, seven colors of the rainbow, seven notes on a musical scale. In a mandala it can be an expression of your higher self or your strong connection with the cosmic energies.
